April in our homeschool – 2021

May 4, 2021May 8, 2021 by annieandfam

This year our April was spent focused on Greek history (fifth grade!) and animal legends (second grade!) along with re-joining society as our kids picked up extra curricular activities, my husband and I recieved our first vaccine shots and we ventured to our favorite farm stay and the coast for a weekend adventures. Last month’s …

March in our homeschool – 2021

April 6, 2021April 8, 2021 by annieandfam

Hello. I am tired. I don’t really feel up to writing a summary of last month’s homeschool, but I do like having written these summaries. So here we go. It may be brief. The anniversary of when the pandemic hit home was March 13 for our family. I had gone to a barre3 class and …

February in our homeschool – 2021

March 2, 2021March 4, 2021 by annieandfam

February is my least favorite month to homeschool. The days are short, we’ve been stuck inside together for too long and patience is in short supply. Normally February is the month I spend exploring local school Web sites to imagine there is a better way than this homeschool gig. But, thanks to the pandemic, there …

January in our homeschool – 2021

February 7, 2021February 7, 2021 by annieandfam

This has been such an interesting academic year for us. While it has been an extremely difficult year for us personally as a family, it has also been a really amazing year for our homeschool. It’s been an interesting juxtaposition and I am so grateful that our time learning together can be a source of …

December in our homeschool – 2020

January 2, 2021January 2, 2021 by annieandfam

Ahhh what to say about the final month in a very, very challenging year? This December was different than years prior in many ways. We were unable to celebrate Christmas with our extended families because of COVID and yet we were able to spend a lot of time with my parents, because they’re our bubble …

November in our homeschool – 2020

December 2, 2020December 2, 2020 by annieandfam

At this risk of sounding like a broken record – this year is weird. There are the ways in which this year is weird for everyone, global pandemic and teetering democracy and all. And then there are unique ways we managed to make this year even weirder for our family, like deciding to do a …

October in our homeschool – 2020

November 2, 2020November 3, 2020 by annieandfam

What a whirlwind October has been for our family! We spent part of the month on a road trip to Colorado, and as I write this we’ve been out of our house 63 days while we remodel parts of our house. Add onto all of that upheaval the stress of the worsening COVID pandemic and …

September in our homeschool – 2020

October 4, 2020October 5, 2020 by annieandfam

When I started this blog two years ago I started out by writing monthly journal entries about homeschool life. Last year, I switched to writing about specific blocks I was teaching my then fourth grader. Having looked back at old posts over the summer I’ve decided I like the monthly journal entry approach best. They …

Back to school 2020

September 17, 2020September 17, 2020 by annieandfam

This is our fifth official year homeschooling (meaning, my oldest is in fifth grade … my kids have always been home …) and this year’s back to school vibe is unlike any other we have experienced. Normally back to school involves back to our lessons – yes – but also back to ballet and back …

Self-care during a pandemic

July 29, 2020July 29, 2020 by annieandfam

I have been reluctant to write about step three of Plan It Out because it’s about self care. What even is self care for mothers in this time of the Coronavirus pandemic? We are home with our children 24/7 and I know that for me, many of my self-care practices have gone out the window.  …

Fitting in our seasonal traditions around a school schedule is going to be a challenge, but a challenge I’m willing to accept because I’m hoping these three will take me apple picking in my old age. 🍎
September has been a wild ride! We’re adjusting to a new schedule, getting a kid on the train before 8 am 😧, starting new homeschool classes, packing lunches, juggling two kids in soccer and sometimes needing to be in two places at the same time. Must be fall. 🍂 I find myself sharing in Stories more - especially homeschool stuff - so come find me there. Also, after sharing that my oldest was starting high school this fall some astute observers reached out saying “wait, wasn’t she in 7th grade last year?” Yes. It’s complicated. 🙃 So I wrote a blog post about her journey from homeschool to high school. Link in bio!
Squeezing every last drop out of summer. Feeling ready to surrender to the rhythms and routines of fall.
I gave myself the gift of not going back to homeschool and back to school all at once, so my littles have another week of summer, but my big kid is off to high school today! 😧😢🤩 Not really sure what to expect from this year, but I know I’ve got great kids and I’ve done my very best to set each of them up to thrive. So here we go 9th grade at school, a 4th/5th grade split at home and 1st grade at home! And I guess Teddy is as close as I’m going to get to having a perpetual kindergartener. 🐶 😂
I’m not sure how wise it was to plan for our last summer trip to run right up the the day before our oldest heads to high school, but the time we spent paddling around this bay restored me in a way few other things do and gave me strength for the big transition that lies ahead. #homeschooltohighschool
A really excellent vacation book stack. 📚 Normally I don’t have four books going at once, but these are all so different from each other and all so good.
Late summer nights on the Puget Sound … a campfire, s’mores, a lost tooth, an owl flying overhead … the good stuff.
Just over here pretending summer’s never going to end. ☀️
