Autumn Meal Plan

November 15, 2020November 15, 2020 by annieandfam

We have been living out of suitcases for two and a half months as we’ve been out of our house for a remodel, and a lot of our regular routines have been up in the air. One of the biggest areas that has felt unsettled for us has been food. This was amplified by the …

September in our homeschool – 2020

October 4, 2020October 5, 2020 by annieandfam

When I started this blog two years ago I started out by writing monthly journal entries about homeschool life. Last year, I switched to writing about specific blocks I was teaching my then fourth grader. Having looked back at old posts over the summer I’ve decided I like the monthly journal entry approach best. They …

Self-care during a pandemic

July 29, 2020July 29, 2020 by annieandfam

I have been reluctant to write about step three of Plan It Out because it’s about self care. What even is self care for mothers in this time of the Coronavirus pandemic? We are home with our children 24/7 and I know that for me, many of my self-care practices have gone out the window.  …

Embracing the quiet season

February 28, 2020February 28, 2020 by annieandfam

After what was definitely our busiest holiday season ever, I was congratulating myself for juggling all the things and pulling off a happy, connected Christmas for our family. Then, I caught the flu. We had driven to Central Oregon to attend a family Christmas party and the combination of being super burnt out, and coming …

Nothing better than spring in Portland. 🌸
We’re wrapping up fairy tales with The Valiant Little Tailor. I’ve made the decision to wrap up first grade early and switch to a second grade curriculum next week. 😱 I’m not one to make impulsive changes in our homeschool and have been contemplating a grade switch for him for months. It’s going to be really interesting! I’ve never switched grades mid-year but he is definitely ready as it became clear the first grade content just wasn’t resonating with him anymore. He has been organically asking questions about second grade subjects (without even knowing that those themes will be covered in second grade). Grateful for the freedom to respond to my kids and adapt our plans in this way. 💛
Pandemic playground time is not my favorite, but it helps with the late-Februaries we’re all suffering from.
We had planned a little Valentine’s Day / Lunar New Year tea party for Sunday, but had to postpone because of the storm. Thankfully our power is back on and we can bake again! These picture books are each based on a Chinese Zodiac sign - I got one for each of my kids’ years. 🐮🐒🐍
Making the most of it! ❄️🔥
The snow & ice storm was super fun until we saw two transformers blow last night and lost power. Fingers crossed it comes back on before we run out of ground coffee. 😆🤞🏻🥶 ☕️
Snow day! We are having a “kids in charge” day here. I realized that for the five months we were away from home I was doing just about everything for my children, because we were in changing environments and stress was high and it felt like too much to ask them to figure out chores in different spaces. It was completely unsustainable and left me feeling depleted and resentful. So today they’re in total control, which means they are in charge of the TV but they’re also in charge of finding their gloves and washing the dishes. It’s feeling like a good reset and a reminder that kids are SO capable if we can just take a step back. And it freed up time for me to make myself a fancy coffee and do some things that fill MY cup. 👏🏻
One kid is learning about the Ancient Andes civilization and one kids is writing a summary of The Frog Prince. Valentines from a homeschool exchange are filling up the window ledges and the sun is shining. Will probably bake brownies later. ❤️
