Planning for an eclectic sixth grade

August 6, 2021August 7, 2021 by annieandfam

Hello! It’s been a weird summer here – how are you? This summer we have been prioritizing socializing and mental health, and as a result, not a lot of homeschool planning has been happening over here. I feel like I’ve done zero homeschool planning, but the reality is that I have picked and purchased most …

Resources for a Waldorf-inspired Fifth Grade

July 21, 2020July 22, 2020 by annieandfam

I am right in the thick of figuring out the resources I will be using for my fifth grader this year. I’m sharing about resources (click here to see my resources planned for first grade) and honestly it’s all still a bit messy for fifth grade. For one thing, I am concerned about libraries being …

Block plan for fifth and first grades

July 10, 2020 by annieandfam

Hello there! We are really in the heart of summer now. My oldest daughter and I almost share a birthday, so when we celebrate the Fourth of July and then our 48-hour birthday, it always feels to me that we’re at the apex of that expansive, light-filled stretch of summer that I love so much. …

Planning for a Waldorf-inspired fourth grade

July 1, 2019July 2, 2019 by annieandfam

I have been deeply immersed in planning for the upcoming school year over the past few weeks. My oldest child will be a fourth grader this year (how did that happen!?) and for the first time I am planning without a curriculum. We have used and loved Lavender’s Blue Homeschool for first through third grades …

Reminder that I’ll be knitting for 12 hours tomorrow to raise funds for World Central Kitchen, Feeding America, Meals on Wheels and No Kid Hungry. Knitters have already raised $275,000 for these amazing organizations and donations will be accepted through tomorrow (3/26) at 7 pm PST. Thanks to those who have already donated and thanks to anyone who can contribute now!
Because a sunny spring day at the Oregon coast must be documented. 🌊
Starting a Harry Potter fractions block with this cutie! 🪄
Getting away for five days by myself has opened up a new way of seeing things and imagining what’s possible. Today this guy and I wanted to go for a hike but nobody else did. So I left the girls to do their school work, which they managed beautifully while I was away, and he and I snuck away to look for deer prints in the mud. It’s super hard to get one-on-one time in our current season of life but this felt really good.
My 9-year-old recently wrapped up a block on Chinese shelters. I just love this block and its mix of fairy tales, geography, history and hands-on projects. He got to dabble in Chinese calligraphy, made a Mongolian yurt with wool felt and a traditional Haaka dwelling from Southern China with clay. Now he and I are working on wrapping up Hebrew stories with the hope of switching to fourth grade work in mid-March. 🥰
The colors & textures of Joshua Tree. 🫶🏻
I planned a February trip to Joshua Tree National Park envisioning winter sunshine but instead I’ve been in a desert snow globe the whole trip. It’s not what I was planning on; it was way better. It’s my understanding that snow in Joshua Tree is extremely rare and to have experienced it for the past few days has been really special. ❄️
Magical day at Ke’e beach in Kauai with my people. 🌴
